Porridge was the staple diet in 19th century British prisons - "gruel" really, which is watery porridge. Porridge is what you get when you boil any cereal - wheat, oats, rye etc. in milk or water. There's not much cereal in gruel and no milk and sugar - just a pinch of salt. Gruel is what Oliver Twist asked for more of in the workhouse.
Hence, in British slang "to be eating porridge", "to be doing porridge", "to be on the porridge" means to be incarcerated in one of Her Majesty's prisons.
Anyway, I was wrong: as it turns out Navalny is not now doing porridge.
