I wrote above: "... serving paratroops – “real” paratroops...would be immediately arrested by the Russian military police for such outrageous behaviour that is shown year in, year out by former troopers."

Well apparently not, if the opinion of Lieutenant General Nikolai Ignatov, Chief of Staff Russian Airborne Troops, is anything to go by, for he has been quoted as saying:

“Swimming in fountains isn't a crime. It’s not an end in itself – swimming and hitting bottles over people’s heads is a purely symbolic event, and, in my opinion, doesn’t entail any consequences.”

As regards the Russian military’s attitude towards drunken and disorderly behaviour of its personnel, in particular the behaviour of some of its airborne troops on August 2 each year, the above statement perhaps reflects a “cultural difference” between the Western and Russian armed forces.

Indeed so and that ultimately is the best answer to the campaign.

Well, there was a peep alright. No, nobody cared that American silver medalist Nick Symmonds dedicated his run to his LGBT friends in his press conference, nobody cared about the off-field remarks made by other athletes. Nope. But Swedish athlete Emma Green decided, for some reason, to wear rainbow-coloured fingernails whilst competing. I guess she thought it'd resonate well with the popular Western/Swedish stance on the matter and grant her a few free PC points.

However, again nobody really cared much. Well, this until Russian athlete and pole vault gold medal winner Isinbaeva got a tad annoyed by all these things... She pretty much said that politics and sports should be kept apart and that competing athletes should respect the laws of the host country, thus merely echoing numerous official statements, including ones made in the West.

The proverbial feces hit the AC when Isinbaeva took it one step further and added that in her opinion this particular piece of law was perfectly in order, that men and women traditionally belong together et cetera. A controversial statement for sure, these days. She did also add that what people are doing in their own bedrooms is their private business, but that sort of got lost in the flurry of things. Isinbaeva swiftly hit Western headlines, apparently condemning homosexuality (!) and all that jazz.

A few hours later, from our inescapably Swedocentric perspective, Green was lauded as a brave heroine and various LGBT pundits were quick to label Isinbaeva a 21st century female Antichrist. As expected, I guess. The amply named gay intifada thus continues, but not without its share of funny twists...

In the wake of the aforementioned incident, Swedish-Ethiopian runner and gold medalist Abeba Aregawi voiced her support for Isinbaevas stance. Oh no...

Perhaps it is to be expected that Aregawi, being a devout Christian from Africa has some rather conservative views vis-a-vis the typical mega-liberal (seriously, no boundaries) modern Swedish "official" stance (you'll find that people don't necessarily agree with this but what can they say in fear of getting publicly lynched).

Normally this would have caused an MSM outrage as conservatives, especially Christian ditto are considered lepers over here. However, it was quickly put under wraps. Aregawi and her manager, the present journalists etc. had a little talk and decided not to publish her remarks.

    Say what?

No, seriously. I may sound like one of those awful "right-wing populist conspiracy nuts" but it does really seem like a spectacular clash of conflicting PC that they didn't know quite how to handle - Aregawi being a black African immigrant with a different set of cultural ideals and such, for which criticism is usually shot down with some kind of racist card. Total conflict, indeed.

I bet Aregawi is getting some carefully engineered "media training" now though. :p Luckily some journalist made sure it made it to the press anyway, but as expected - commentary fields have been shut down, other news outlets have chosen not to mention it at all and nobody really wants to talk about it in general. Now I can't help but noticing a grand many layers of hypocrisy. Consider that Isinbaeva did point out cultural differences herself in regards to the Russian attitude. So what's it going to be?

    This just keeps getting better.

Drutten, that's a really interesting story. It's fun to watch the confusion as PC wires get crossed and a "does not compute" message flashes across the screen.

    Drutten,

Just interested to know about the Swede who has the family name "Green". Surely that's not a Swedish name? Is she married to an Anglophone or is she the progeny of immigrants? I know there were several US citizens who settled in Sweden so as not to be drafted for the Vietnam war.

As regards the shit hitting the fan following Isinbaeva being labelled a homophobe by the Western media, I noticed how in the UK Independent there were many readers' comments to this story that said the Russian athlete looked like a man and should go in for transvestism, that she was ugly etc., which made me think that such comments likely emenated from homosexual males who otherwise present themselves as such beautiful, loving people who would certainly never wish to hurt the sensibilities of anyone, rather than a gang of misogynistic "queers" or, as the case may be, "dykes" suffering a hissy fit, which is the impression that they certainly gave me.

It's simpler than that I think. Gren is standard Swedish for "branch" and it's a common surname, especially with a prefix such as Lövgren, Lundgren etc. At any rate, it is a common phenomenon to mess with the spelling while insisting on retaining the pronunciation. Typical examples are Green (Gren), Steen (Sten), Lööv/Lööf (Löv) etc, so I think that's it.

And the circus continues here in Sweden. Today there's been calls for a big rainbow-nail campaign and it's been marketed heavily in the news. The turn up so far has been rather modest, thirteen people have submitted photos to one of the biggest papers in this country (about 1 million readers) in 12 hours or so.

And a tad off-topic but Green didn't quite make it to the battle for the medals and... Well, Svetlana Shkolina got the gold. Ouch.

Haha, really interesting. Also what The Kremlin Stooge reported how Milan, Venice and Turin broke off their twin arrangements with Russian cities over the gay propaganda law but remain twinned to cities in the third world where homosexuality is a criminal offense.

It is very interesting how the Westerners obviously feel themselves much better equipped to write prescriptions for the Russians to follow than they are for doing the same for more exotic cultures.

It is like they feel that in one case they have standing and in the other they don't.

    Yep. They were... quite amazing.

I look forwards to seeing more details on how the Western media twisted his words, as he alleges they did. (Very believable).

I've just goggled some pics of Isinbaeva and there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with her looks. I actually find her quite attractive. I'm guessing that if she were walking down the street and asked one of those posters over at The Independent message board for a date, assuming they're not gay, they'd probably jump at the chance. I know I would. Just because she's tall and muscular doesn't mean that she looks masculine. She's an Olympic pole-vaulter where physical strength is really essential to her particular sport, so that's not exactly a shock.

I remember when all of those stories came out a few years ago about Putin/Kabaeva, there were posters over on the Huffington Post boards claiming the same thing about her - which we all know is patently ridiculous since Kabaeva was/is known to top most beautiful female athlete lists at home and abroad. These people just can't get over the fact that physically attractive women can actually support their government, support Putin, etc. so they have to somehow rationalize away their feminine qualities. You know Putin couldn't possibly have one of the hottest women on the planet because in the eyes of Huffpo liberals, he's the reincarnation of Stalin, blah, blah, blah, so it goes.

I have to say speaking as a old and experienced observer of western media spin campaigns, that I have never come across anything that has quite plumbed such depths of mendacity as has the campaign about the Russian law. When two young athletes cannot exchange an affectionate peck after winning an event without being unwillingly conscripted into a campaign that has nothing to do with them one knows that all sense of veracity and basic decency has been thrown out of the window. Western critics of this law have been quick to conjure up the Nazis in a way that is totally absurd. It seems to me that the true comparison with the Nazis is with the way the western media campaign is being run. In its cynical and heartless manipulation of young people like the two athletes this media campaign bears comparison with the ones Dr. Goebbels used to run.

Looks like a pretty normal athlete or a bit more attractive then the standard athletes.

The people moaning and complaining about the Russian law are the same ones under there breath complain of all the engineered liberal social programs enacted in the west that have be failures with gay rights, feminism, mass immigration and multi-culturism.
