Beautiful livery. This is one of former Aeroflot planes in "light" configuration, that are being handed back to Sukhoi as they don't fully satisfy the airline requirements and are being replaced by new frames in "full" configuration. They are now being operated by smaller airlines (Moskovia, Tsentr-Yug) or governmental agencies (Ministry of Internal Affairs).

It's interesting to note that the Russian MoD has now placed orders for an air force tanker based on the Il-96. I mentioned this in this very thread last year, saying that the aircraft in question surely would be better suited for proper long-range tanker duties than the Il-76 series-derived tankers of today (including the MD-90A).

    I was right. ;-)

Yes, but these are surplus planes, which were ordered by cargo company Polyot and canceled because the company run into financial difficulties. The Il-96-400 has the advantage of a much longer range and fuel capacity than the Il-76, but the disadvantage of needing long prepared runways to operate. Interesting thing is that one of these Il-96-400T were converted to VIP transport/command plane for the FSB:

Soon Bortnikov will ride a bigger plane than Putin himself, as the presidential fleet uses smaller Il-96-300.
