I'm new here, and starting out with a friendly question about two wooden plates (for wall hanging) I bought at a thrift shop here in the US. They are both the same design (girls dancing) and hand painted- 11 inches in diameter. A label is glued on to the back of each- the labels were cut with scissors and printed in blue ink. бССР and the date 5 79, along with a description of the design, etc . I'm guessing they were made in Byelorussia in 1979. Does anyone know anything about them ?

    Here's a picture of one of them..... 002 (640x478).jpg

    The label ..... label 001 (640x478).jpg

I don't know much about Belarusian arts and crafts so I cannot say anything about the motive but they remind me of a pair of typical handpainted wooden plates (khokhloma style) that I have lying about somewhere, bought in Leningrad in the late 80's from some kind of souvenir shop. They were similarly labelled and presumably came from some kind of little workshop specialised in such touristy articles.

Not very helpful, I know. :p

Thank you so much, Moscow Exile and Drutten ! Now I know not only precisely where they were made, I also know a bit about the souvenir arts and crafts industry during that time. So there were shops all over the USSR selling souvenir art, and I suppose most of the factories operated in a similar fashion.

Glad I asked the question !

    Dear Sky Fisher,

It seems as if that Zhlobin factory is still operating. Check it out on the web: there are very many sites for that firm. You still se souvenir shops in Russia with similar works on sale. Their retail outlets are usually in hotel lobbies and bookshops.
